In a country like Cameroon where disability is still seen as a curse and disabled persons are marginalized, there are far too few organizations able to take care about people with disabilities and to encourage them to become integrated into society. So, when one of these structures asked some months ago, the support of Fondation Kana concerning the rehabilitation of its premises, we could not refuse.

Created in 2003, in Obala (department of Lekie) by a young deaf couple, INEDAV (National Evangelical Institute for visually and Hearing impaired Children) is an educational organization specialized in the care of deaf and blind children. Since its opening, INEDAV has managed to reach two goals: changing the mindset about disability in rural areas thanks to awareness campaign launched every year in September and affording disabled children the opportunity to live a «normal» life while giving them access to quality education and socio-professional perspectives. The results are clear: among the former pupils many are now studying in Obala, Eseka or Yaounde’s high schools or doing an apprenticeship in hairdressing, fashion design or joinery.

Thirteen children from 1st to 6th grade are currently studying in the center; this number of pupils is limited due to old school facilities since everything is made of wood and earth. Thanks to private donors, INEDAV started in 2012 the building of two new classrooms but because they didn’t have enough money they were not been able to finish the project. Moved by the all the daily actions led by INEDAV, Fondation Kana was determined to afford the pupils and their teachers comfortable conditions to study. This is why this past March we started the building of two new permanent classrooms. To be sure that the building work would be over on time, some volunteers of Fondation Kana have joined for one day the technical team on the field.

As soon as they will come back from the Easter holidays, the pupils will be able to study in these new places. Fondation Kana hopes that these new classrooms will permit INEDAV to reach its goal of increasing the number of pupils and welcoming for the next school year 25 children.

On 5th December 2013, Fondation Kana has joined the Global volunteering community to celebrate the 28th International Volunteer Day.

«Young global active», the theme chosen this year by the UN has been contextualized in the country with «Youth volunteering for an exemplary Cameroon».

Government, national and international organisations involved in volunteering and volunteers gathered together in a network, took part in the celebration.

During this day focused on volunteer’s training, the aim was to instill basics of road traffic safety to the 150 volunteers selected from the different organisations of the network. At the end of the training, the volunteers have been divided and placed at some important crossing places of the city to raise awareness among road users, concerning basic rules of road safety such as the use of safety belt and mobile phone, the respect of pathways, traffic lights, taxi’s areas…

Fondation Kana in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Civic Education (MINJEC) carried out educational lectures in 3 high schools of Yaounde in order to increase young people awareness about the concept and the importance of volunteering. As a result, 155 young people have been involved : 95 in Mimboman and 60 in Madagascar.

On the theme: "The Action of Volunteers is Necessary", this year the volunteers of Fondation Kana like those of other associations in the world, were delighted to put their services, strength and competence to the benefit of others so as to promote work and show case the potential of volunteers in the socio-economic development at the local and as well at the national levels.

In collaboration with other international volunteer institutions (VNU, VSO, JICA, and KOICA), actors of civil society and the Ministry of Youth and Civic Education (MINJEC), many actions have been put in place which permits various associations present to continuously encourage people to engage themselves in volunteer and benevolent activities.
