- Civic education
The project Accessible election for people with disability put in place by Fondation Kana and supported by SightSavers has implicated a good number of persons in handicap situations and handicapped persons during the first phase. For the second phase which consisted of involving these same persons, bringing them to the understanding that they were going to vote and observe elections as citizens are expected to.
So it was a question of training almost 100 handicapped persons as Observators for elections and this training was to last for 2 days in collaboration with experts in electoral questioning. The training had to be backed with objectives to accomplish all the above. The Sensitization was carried out through audio, visual and the voice of the Press.
These persons were thus able to register, vote, and even observe the election day. This educational program for citizenship helped us understanding how possible it was to involve persons in handicap situations and living with all sorts of challenges, in the electoral process all that concerns civil responsibility.
Civic education Phase 1

- Civic education
This Project falls in line with the numerous educative programmes master minded by Fondation Kana for the Cameroonian youth and especially civic education for persons with special needs.
It is therefore this urge that prompted Fondation Kana to get in to a platform with other Associations across the national triangle with the same vision and mission: the empowerment, the promotion of the rights of persons with special needs, autonomy…This initiative won the admiration of the British based Non Governmental Organization Sightsavers whose assistance towards the realization of our goal cannot be under estimated in financial and human resource terms.
As an objective, this project is aimed at sensitization of persons with special needs to get themselves registered on the electoral list and effectively casting their votes for the candidate they feel has an approach and strategies for the preoccupations of persons with special needs in a short, medium and/or long term in Cameroon. By participating in this process, they will leave an indelible imprint within the realms of democratic institutions despite their 15% demographic representation as revealed by the World Health Organization’s report.
Admittedly, this process shall considerably influence the construction of a society with democratic principles and ethics; considering the fact that in term of development in Cameroon:
- The Growth, Development, Strategy and Employment plans in Cameroon by 2035 cannot be attained without considering the modest contributions of persons with special needs in all the sectors of the economy,
- That the inclusion of persons with special needs in mean stream activities remains an indicator of modernism, From an entirely social stand point and cognizant of Cameroon’s context:
- The virtue of justice, fraternity and solidarity ardently embedded in most communities in Cameroon can easily be shared during gathering such as election.
As such, through this project, persons with special needs will be permitted without doubts to democratically participate actively in decision and leadership matters of Cameroon; a civic right and a responsibility of all citizens in Cameroon with distinction to sex, religion, culture and/or tradition. It is in this capacity that some frequently encountered challenges in would be remedied. These include:
- Inadequate number of persons with special needs registered in electoral processes,
- Limited interest and commitment in decision making activities,
- Limited number of persons with special need at the helm of leadership resulting from their lag of commitment and participation in leadership matters,
- Timid citizenship emancipation by persons with special needs.
These preoccupations necessitated a sensitization campaigns and educative talks on citizenship rules and responsibility precisely via the electoral process. As part of these activities therefore, a wheelchair basketball match was organized at the National Centre for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities Cardinal Paul Emile Leger (Etoug-Ebe Yaounde) with an intension to inject some leisure, especially radiate health for all in the lives of persons with special needs and also to spur them to speak and communicate as one person via sports.
Accessible election for people with disability in South West Region Fako
In order to broaden the benefit of our vision and mission, we decided to detach some of members of Fondation Kana to other regions of Cameroon with the specific task as mentioned above. The south west region team members were charged with the same task in each Division. In Manyu, activities were centered in Mamfe with our partners such as Manyu Circle Association for the Blind (MACAFOBI). The result we obtained from this venture are satisfactory and inspirational as they have wetted our taste to continue with the same project but this time to withdraw and accompany the visually impaired, the physically challenged and other to the electoral poles in a bid to facilitate their full participation in a transparent manner in this 2011 presidential election in Cameroon.
Sensitization on hand washing in schools
- Details
- Health
Due to the fact that our hands play a very important role in our day to day life’s, occupied through out the day, in frequent contact with many things such as money, telephone, toilets, keyboard and many other objects.
To this effect, creating awareness on hand sanitation or hygiene is very necessary especially for the young children taking in to consideration the fact that in primary schools an average of about 6 to 9 are infected yearly. Dysentery is at the origin of at least 17% of deaths amongst the children of less than 5years in Cameroon which is due to cholera and other infections...
The interest of the Kana Foundation which therefore is to always came to the aid of OEV (orphans and vulnerable children) through its projects such as guardianship and sensitization of this pupil in the domain of health is a vital concern to us.
During the weekly activities marking the JIV 2012, a strong team descended down in many schools in Yaounde with educative talks, and accompaignied by persons to teach the pupil on how to wash their hands and the importance of portable water.
This was aimed at preventing illnesses and to create awareness in at least 1000 children on how to avoid such illnesses.
The project will continue during the opening of the 2013/2014 academic year in many schools and institutions of some regions in Cameroon.
