In its effort to sensitize vulnerable persons, Fondation Kana answered an appeal for a tender to execute a project entitled scaling up Malaria for impact in Cameroun 2010-2014. We did however received the support of SITEU, a sponsor in the field of health in Dschang in the West Region of Cameroon.

The aim of this project was to distribute treated long lasting Malaria nets, to sensitize population on Malaria prevention measures, to promote good habits towards the fight against Malaria, to prevent Malaria amongst pregnant women, to diagnose and treat Malaria related cases, to provide care to victims of malaria at home as well as to develop private, community and national interests in the fight against malaria.

For efficiency, proximity communication was intensified in order to facilitate exchanges aimed at improving on the behaviors of the villages with regards to the prevention of Malaria.

Malaria has been for long been forgotten, malaria remain the second illness in the World accountable for mortality by infection after HIV/AIDS with approximately one million persons losing their lives each year (350 to 500.000.000 persons infected each year). Malaria has been said to have 1 child in every 30 seconds. It affects exclusively the Southern Nations with 90% in Africa.

On the other hand, it is estimated that between 3 to 4 billion dollars are spent annually for its treatment.

Our objective is entirely that of public sensitization on this international endemic disease that seriously suffers from medication. Not only expressing it from an endemic stand point but as well its socio economic implications in Africa and other under-developed countries in a general manner.

In effect, this illness has its costs and represent a considerable hindrance to the development that of a collective interest; and that which has been incessantly been fought for over the years.

The environmental education program of Fondation Kana inclined towards the training of fifty youths, in the council of Dschang, on how to manage their domestic garbage through composting. So the main object of that training was to instill to those young the values of environmental protection through the centered management of their garbage which are a real problem for our society today.

We should note that making compost has so many advantages such as :

  • The reduction of garbage among us in particular and in the society in general;
  • The reduction of the human activity pressure on the environment through the deportation of those garbage with vehicles, the incineration of the garbage or the garbage dump all over which is more dangerous for the society with the risk of diseases;
  • Making compost is favourable to the nature as compost re-enriched the land after intensive agricultural activities;
  • Reduction of the use of chemical fertilizer, which are more expensive, and more impoverished for the ground;

Then with the collaboration of the town council of Dschang through support of their technicians, the financial supply of the association GADD as a partner of the project, the technical participation of French associations ERA and ELAN and the technical supply of the local association ADS also partner of the project, a solid workforce has been endued of the techniques on how to manage domestic garbage by the means of making compost, with theoretical and practical knowledge just waiting now to be deployed.

In a country like Cameroon where disability is still seen as a curse and disabled persons are marginalized, there are far too few organizations able to take care about people with disabilities and to encourage them to become integrated into society. So, when one of these structures asked some months ago, the support of Fondation Kana concerning the rehabilitation of its premises, we could not refuse.

Created in 2003, in Obala (department of Lekie) by a young deaf couple, INEDAV (National Evangelical Institute for visually and Hearing impaired Children) is an educational organization specialized in the care of deaf and blind children. Since its opening, INEDAV has managed to reach two goals: changing the mindset about disability in rural areas thanks to awareness campaign launched every year in September and affording disabled children the opportunity to live a «normal» life while giving them access to quality education and socio-professional perspectives. The results are clear: among the former pupils many are now studying in Obala, Eseka or Yaounde’s high schools or doing an apprenticeship in hairdressing, fashion design or joinery.

Thirteen children from 1st to 6th grade are currently studying in the center; this number of pupils is limited due to old school facilities since everything is made of wood and earth. Thanks to private donors, INEDAV started in 2012 the building of two new classrooms but because they didn’t have enough money they were not been able to finish the project. Moved by the all the daily actions led by INEDAV, Fondation Kana was determined to afford the pupils and their teachers comfortable conditions to study. This is why this past March we started the building of two new permanent classrooms. To be sure that the building work would be over on time, some volunteers of Fondation Kana have joined for one day the technical team on the field.

As soon as they will come back from the Easter holidays, the pupils will be able to study in these new places. Fondation Kana hopes that these new classrooms will permit INEDAV to reach its goal of increasing the number of pupils and welcoming for the next school year 25 children.
